Why the academy exists

The rulebook matters. The game asks for more.

Officials are expected to recognize plays, move to the right position, communicate decisions, manage personalities, work with a crew, and maintain control—often before they have received enough practical training to feel ready.

The development gap

Too many officials receive scattered information, attend a limited number of meetings, and are then expected to perform confidently in live competition. Knowing a rule does not automatically explain where to stand, what to watch, how to sell the ruling, or what happens next.

Our mission is to give officials a clearer path from information to confident execution. That means teaching more than definitions. It means helping an official understand the purpose of the rule, recognize the situation, establish the right position, make the ruling, complete the administration, and communicate it with credibility.

The academy is designed for focused learning between assignments. Officials can study a concept, work through situations, identify one or two practical goals, and carry those goals directly into their next game.

Meet the founder

Emanuel Thompson

Founder Sports Official Course Instructor Public-Safety Professional

Great Lakes Officials Academy was founded by Emanuel Thompson with one clear purpose: to give officials a practical, organized place to develop the skills that matter once the game begins. His passion for officiating and public service shaped an academy built around preparation, accountability, communication, composure, and continuous improvement.

Through his own experience, Emanuel recognized that officials are often given rules and expectations without enough opportunities to practice positioning, mechanics, game administration, crew communication, and difficult decision-making in realistic situations. GLOA was created to help close that gap and make quality development more accessible to officials at every stage.

The academy is designed to support the brand-new official preparing for a first assignment, the working official trying to become more consistent, and the experienced official or crew looking for a sharper approach to leadership, judgment, and game control.

Emanuel’s long-term vision is to grow Great Lakes Officials Academy into a complete multi-sport development platform that combines online courses, scenario-based education, video training, association resources, crew development, clinics, camps, and a community committed to raising the standard of officiating.

Independent supplemental training

Great Lakes Officials Academy is an independent education platform built around practical officiating development and NFHS-style application. It does not replace registration, certification, testing, mechanics, policies, interpretations, or instructions required by a state association, local officials association, league, conference, assigner, or governing body. Those requirements always take priority.
